Classic Wardrobe

12 Best Wardrobe Buys

Wardrobes start with a few basics that will always be in fashion and are versatile enough to move through the seasons of the year.  Many call these ‘investment items” because they will be the foundation which can be updated each year with more basics or the newer trendy items.

During economic times, this wardrobe will dress you in fashion for every occasion provided you do it wisely.  Purchase clothes that are made of good fabric, have a cut and style for your figure type and have an image that will last. Always think quality as you do your shopping.  Look for well-constructed, quality clothes.

With everyone going back to school, there are still great sales out there.  And the holiday season will have more bargains to fill up your closet.  Based on this classic suggestion below, take a look at what you have and what you need to round out your wardrobe. We have put together our suggestion with three investment costs.  After you find some bargains on blouses or cardigan sweaters, you may want to spend more on a trench coat or other items.

Trench Coat

[amzps id="169"]

This is an important clothing item that can be worn year round.  Choose one that is well made, good or double stitching, and can withstand a light shower or a heavy downpour of rain.  Keep to a classic style without a lot of bangle or zippers.  Light colors will fading over the years, but if you look great in a red or orange coat, go for it.  That’s important too but your coat should last for 3-4 years.  Fading at the color or cuffs will mean you will to replace it sooner.

[amzps id="385"]

[amzps id="386"]

The coat length should be between mid-thigh or to your knee which will allow you to wear it with almost all dress or skirt lengths.  For the colder climates, pick a coat that has a zip in/out or button in/out liner.  Some come with scarves, but this is an easy, inexpensive accessory you can use to really show off your personality and add color to every outfit.

[amzps id="737"]

Black Pants

[amzps id="553"]

[amzps id="700"]

Figure contouring black pants with work with any blouse, sweater, sweatshirt you may have.  Make sure they fit you well and a trip to a tailor will make sure of this.  This is a piece that you will wear a lot.

[amzps id="699"]

Choose a leg opening that is not too flared or too tight so that it will cover all the different functions you go to.  Choose a leg length so that the bottom hem leaves 3 inches of your high heels showing.  This should hit the mid point of the front of your foot.

[amzps id="698"]

If you wear more flat shoes or sandals, the hem should be just above the ground but not drag as you walk.  These will last a long time, but if they drag, you might just make it through one or two season only.

[amzps id="697"]

Dark Jeans

[amzps id="300"]

Dark, very dark blue navy or black jeans are in style and can be dressed up or down.  Jeans with fading will always be on the casual side. Embroidery or stitching will limit the use of these pants.  Keep it plain with just construction stitching to wear longer.

[amzps id="302"]

A low rise or mid rise with patch pockets positioned over your rear will look great and not add any bulk to your shape. A slight boot cut looks good for most figures and allows an option on wearing heels, boots.  Re-read our comments on the length of the pants above to make sure you get the leg length that is right for your figure.

[amzps id="309"]

Jeans come in so many leg lengths, leg widths, curvy and slim styles.  Well, they come in every shape just like we do.  Today you should be able to find the jean that is just right for you.

Tank Tops and Tees

[amzps id="183"]

[amzps id="738"]

Don’t we all love to jump into a pair of jeans and throw a tank top over our heads? Boom!! We’re done and ready to curl up with a good book or go out with friends.  Tees can be paired with other tees or under a blouse.  A color-coordinated tee, jeans and jacket can be quite sophisticated.

[amzps id="739"]

Pick tank tops or tees that will coordinate color wise with your other wardrobe items.  Pick solid colors to get the most use out of them. If your budget can afford it, add some tees that are dark colored and some that are very light pastel color.

[amzps id="182"]

Cardigan

[amzps id="705"]

[amzps id="704"]

I started to call this section a knit cardigan but the cardigan style comes in so many other fabrics.  It will replace a jacket with a skirt and blouse or a dress.  In addition to giving a little more warmth, it can add another color or made you outfit more sophisticated, refined or western.  Cardigans readily accept other accessories like scarves, necklaces.  It can be buttoned-down or cinched in with a belt.

[amzps id="702"]

For versatility choose a light weight cardigan in cotton, wool, or cashmere.  The bottom of the cardigan should hit about mid-hip.  And the sleeves can be full length or the more popular ¾ length.

[amzps id="701"]

[amzps id="703"]

Dresses

[amzps id="709"]

We all want and need at least one simple little dress in our wardrobe.  The dress that can be dolled up with jewelry, scarves, jackets, crisp shirts, cardigans, well you get the idea.  Pick a jersey, silk or light to medium weight fabric so it can be worn year round. Since this will be a basic in your wardrobe, be careful in choosing the color.

[amzps id="710"]

Take a look at the jackets and cardigans, scarves and necklaces you already have.  What color will go with what you already have?  If you are just getting started building these basics, then a neutral color or small print dress make be the answer. Neutral colors can be black, brown, navy, cream or tan.  Pick a color that goes well with your skin tone and hair color.

[amzps id="688"]

Little Black Dress

[amzps id="235"]

You’ve probably heard your grandmother and mother talk about their ‘little black dresses.  Well, it’s still true today, but it doesn’t really have to black.  It should be one of the neutral colors that make your skin and hair seem to glow.  For evening, black is always stunning and most of us look good in it…. and slimmer. Gulp!!

[amzps id="707"]

This is the dress that you rush to pull out of your closet when you need to be elegant and chic. Whether you choose strapless or one that has little rounded sleeves just covering your shoulder is up to you, but choose one that you never have to tug at or shift around in.  Make it a perfect fitting dress.  You need to look elegant and pulling and shifting in your dress won’t achieve that.  You need to glide into every room with no fuss, no muss.

[amzps id="706"]

Basic Skirt

[amzps id="714"]

A pencil skirt, as I said in another article, is the best shape for everyone’s body.  It curves slightly in at the sides and back to emphasize your hips and waist.  Just think of the three S’s for this skirt – sexy, seductive, and sophisticated.  Remember that as you select the material.  It should never add bulk but need to lightly cover your body. If it bulges a little here or there, go find a tailor and get it form fitted to your body.

[amzps id="713"]

If you have no curves to show off, pick an A-line skirt that just barely curves out at the hem.  This slight silhouette will be very flattering for your body style.

A solid neutral color will go with more tops.  But if you have a number of solid blouses and sweaters, you might want to choose a muted plaid or stripe. Just keep it subtle.

[amzps id="712"]

Sunday-Best and Office Professional Suit

[amzps id="632"]

Your lifestyle may not call for a suit at the office and it might seem out of character for you to wear one to church.  But the versatility of these pieces mixed with other tops, skirts and pants in your closet will give your yet another way to mix up the pieces and seem to have more clothes.

[amzps id="719"]

As we said before, you need this in a neutral color and a fabric that will work in all the seasons you have.  And try to get a suit that you can throw in the washing machine so you don’t have the expense of dry cleaning.

[amzps id="718"]

Whether you choose to wear a pantsuit or a skirt and jacket suit, go to the tailor and make them a perfect fit.  Always wash both pieces together.  Why?  While it is slight, washing does make color fade a little.  You want this suit to always be the same color from top to bottom.

[amzps id="716"]

[amzps id="717"]

Blouses

[amzps id="723"]

Whether printed or plain, feminine or tailored, you have a big choice in blouses.  And choosing the color, fabric and style can jazz up some of your more basic neutral colored clothes.  Blouses don’t cost as much as the items we’ve reviewed previously but they can be an important ‘burst” to your outfit.

[amzps id="722"]

[amzps id="721"]

Take a look at your other clothes and find a fabric, color and style that will go with the most pants, skirts, jackets and cardigans you have.  Since your other wardrobe pieces have been solid colored, this would be a time to see what printed fabric blouses go well with them. Pick one blouse that is feminine that can also go on a date.  Pick another blouse that is more tailored for dressing for the office.

[amzps id="720"]

Handbag and Purses

[amzps id="724"]

One thing to invest in is a good leather purse that you can carry all day and all night. Neutral colors are still the best, but some shades of red, mustard yellow can really fill that bill too.  Find a size that will let you carry all you daily needs without causing the bag to stretch and bulge or straining the zipper to break.

[amzps id="727"]

A bag or purse is another investment that will be around for several years.  Keep the style classic without studs, fringe, or bulky hardware.  If possible pick a purse that has two handles or straps, one to sling over your shoulder with your casual outfits and a shorter one for special occasions.  These straps usually are easily detachable.

[amzps id="725"]

Shoes

[amzps id="504"]

[amzps id="731"]

It’s hard to decide how many shoes you really need.  You need heels for work and evening out.  Flats are sometimes the best choice but you also need a good pair of boots for those rainy or snowy days or just as a fashion statement.  Then if you are a runner, you will need special shoes for this.

[amzps id="729"]

[amzps id="730"]

Take a look at the colors of your outfits and find a dark and a light pair of high heels.  Same thing for the flats you want.  The expensive item will be the boots but get all of your shoes first and start a piggy bank budget to save up for the boots.

[amzps id="736"]

[amzps id="735"]

Always get shoes that fit perfectly.  Even if they are the perfect style you’ve been looking for, make sure they fit correctly.  While it’s better to decide this before you buy them, sometimes shoes can cause trouble after we try to wear them for a day.  If they slip on your heel or pinch a toe after wearing them half a day, take them back to the store. Exchange them for another pair so you can smile while you walk.

I Want Leather But Which Kind?

We All Want Leather

While we all want a leather skirt, leather jacket or at the least a leather vest, we also need to decide which leather from all the varieties that are on the market today.  They may all be made from animal hides but will look and feel quite different based on the preparation to make the leather.

[amzps id="405"]

Tanning Methods

Leather is prepared for clothing which is called tanning.  There are several methods for tanning as some are with chrome, boiling, vegetable or rawhide treatments.  Each type of tanning treatment provides a different look and kind of leather.

Vegetable Tanning

[amzps id="401"]

Vegetable tanning uses vegetable material to do the actual tanning.  This process provides supple leather that is also very strong. Leather tanned this way has a one drawback.  It can be damaged by water.  The water may cause the color to change, the leather to shrink or become very stiff and uncomfortable to wear. This tanning method provides leather in different shades of brown.

Chrome Tanning

[amzps id="454"]

Chrome tanning uses salts to tan the leather.  This process will provide leather that won’t stretch but will hold its shape.  The leather will be supple even after it is exposed to water.  So those rainy days won’t damage your leather outfit. This tanning method can be used to tan leather in many different colors as opposed to the vegetable tanning which is only shades of brown.

Boiling Tannery

The Boiling method is used for leather that will be hard and durable rather than the more supple leather used for clothing, upholstered furniture. The finished leather is very hard leather that will be durable for utility items such as the binding on books.

Rawhide Process

Animal hides are stripped down and become a thin but rough material in the Rawhide process.  The leather is soaked in a material that contains lime.  The leather is then rinsed and stretched to obtain the thinnest material.  Shoes, some shoe laces and drum heads make good use of leather produced by this method.

Always take into consideration the way you want to use the clothes when selected the leather type.  Pick the one that best suits your clothing, furniture or upholstery even upholstering a saddle for your horse.

Different Animal – Different Appeal

[amzps id="452"]

Another consideration is the animal that provided the hide.  Most leather is from cow hides but some unusual leathers come from other animal hides.  A common leather is from lamb hides and unusual, rare ones can be from kangaroo. Using leather from an animal other than a cow hide is done for a specific purpose.

Fashion

Fashion has required a variety of leathers to add variety and posh to our outfits. The industry has been happy to accommodate us by providing crocodile, alligator, python and ostrich leathers.  The texture and pattern of each processed leather adds to our fashion design.  As color is added, leather fashion can has become a true fashion statement.

[amzps id="457"]

Function

More leathers are being created to suit different functions.  Tanning makes these hides appeal to each person’s taste and use.  Leather can now be more durable, more supple or pliant and softer to the touch.  Exotic or rare leathers appeal to our sight and touch.  As more animal species are used in our leather manufacturing, we have a wide choice of materials that will be durable and long lasting.
